Summer Break LAB: MapReduce

In this LAB we will take a look at some issues and challenges in Hadoop MapReduce and get them right.

This course is project-oriented. It aims to solve one or multiple tasks by letting students develop small software projects. Students will be grouped into teams of 2-3 people.

Topics will include:

MapReduce, Hadoop, Hadoop++, (Hadoop++)++, ...

Administrative issues:

  • Students are expected to have successfully passed the information systems undergraduate lecture as well as the database systems core lecture or equivalent lectures (e.g. distributed systems core lecture). Additional DB-related courses are considered a plus.
  • You are expected to be proficient in Java and understand the MapReduce programming paradigm and processing pipeline. Proficiency in C++ is considered a plus.
  • This course counts 6 graded ECTS.
  • This course can also be counted as a `research internship' for grad school.

  • Regular weekly meetings
  • The kickoff meeting will be on August 1, 2011 at 11:15 at E1 1, 2nd floor, seminar room of ISG. You must attend that meeting to participate.
  • The number of participants is limited to 15 people. If too many people appear, we may select candidates based on qualification.
  • Requirements for passing this course:
    • Regular attendance of meetings (you may miss at most one meeting)
    • Active participation in design, implementation, integration, benchmarking, and testing
    • Successful presentation of your project
    • Final grade: based on code quality, performance, participation, contributions, and presentation
  • Prof. Dittrich will offer two weekly offices hours to help you with design, technical issues, presentation, etc. You must participate in at least one office hour every week.
